Third International FReDA User Conference
On 20 and 21 October 2025, the Third International FReDA User Conference will take place in Wiesbaden, and we invite you to present your analyses based on data from FReDA (and/or the Pairfam Relationship and Family Panel and/or the Generations and Gender Survey GGS).
FReDA/GGS Autumn School 2025
The FReDA/GGS Autumn School will take place again in September – a three-day workshop at Gutenberg University Mainz that provides a practical introduction to working with our data sets.
Restricted Use File (RUF)
For clearly specified research questions, it is possible, under certain conditions, to work with a sensitive FReDA data set at GESIS, which allows for additional analyses.
Refreshing the sample
In order to ensure that the survey is as representative as possible and to keep the number of interviews at a consistently high level, FReDA has refreshed the sample. To this end, the survey institute infas conducted a recruitment survey for us in autumn 2024. As a result, around 15,000 new participants have been added to our panel, and the anchor gross sample now comprises 35,999 cases. Wave 5A (anchor), including the new participants, has been in the field since 7 May 2025, and participation has been high so far.
People seeking protection from Ukraine in Germany
There are currently 1.1 million Ukrainians living in Germany who are seeking protection from Russia's war of aggression against their homeland. The study ‘People seeking protection from Ukraine in Germany (IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP survey)’ was launched in the summer of 2022 as a joint project of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) to investigate the living situation of those seeking protection in Germany.
Since August 2022, more than 30,000 interviews have been conducted with Ukrainians who entered Germany between 24 February and early June 2022. The fifth survey is currently being conducted as part of this longitudinal survey, which takes place every six months. From autumn 2025, the sample will be surveyed again as part of the FReDA sub-study, so that this longitudinal study can be continued in the long term and compared with FReDA data for the entire population of Germany.
We are currently working on integrating the Ukraine survey into the FReDA project and synchronising the questionnaires accordingly. In future, the FReDA data set will also include data from the Ukraine survey.
New FReDA data version
GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, our project partner responsible for conducting the surveys, data preparation, documentation and provision of data for FReDA, has updated the data version of our survey and published a new version. The new data package (version 4.1.0) contains the following studies, as did version 4.0.0 published in May:
If you are currently using FReDA data, please get the updated data! The new data version of FReDA can be found as usual via this link in the GESIS search. You can also download and read which data corrections have been made in an errata table.
Additional biopart syntax for pairfam wave 14
From mid-December, an additional Stata syntax will be available for all pairfam users, which supplements the generated ‘biopart’ dataset on partnership history with information from survey wave 14. So far, this additional dataset only includes waves 1-13. The syntax will be included in release 14.2 from mid-December in the data and syntax folder. If you are already using this release, you can informally request the extended version of the release from the GESIS data archive dataservices@gesis.org.
FReDA is stabilised FReDA has been permanent since 1 January 2025! Five years after its implementation, the project has thus overcome an important hurdle and offers researchers a long-term research perspective. The analyses and findings based on FReDA data also provide policymakers with important information for future decisions.
Second International FReDA User Conference The International FReDA User Conference on 7 & 8 October 2024 in Mannheim was a well-attended forum for researchers from a wide range of disciplines focusing on family and partnership issues.
FReDA Autumn School 2024 The three-day workshop at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz provided a practical introduction to working with FReDA datasets.
